F9: Practical Control of Batch Reactors 3:15PM - 4:15PM (Tuesday, April 24, 2007)
Many pharmaceutical and biotech plants have opportunities to improve the control of key batch reactor operating variables. This session details several case studies where problems with overshoot, oscillation, or slow response were solved by application of basic control techniques, loop testing, and simulation. Benefits are obtained in faster startup, increased production, and reduced operating costs.
Plant engineering and operations people typically have excellent training in the scientific aspects of production except for control theory & application. This session will bridge the gap from theory to plant operations by illustrating • Intuitive methods for simulation to find the best control strategy, controller algorithm, and controller tuning • Simple models for system design, troubleshooting, and operator training • Importance of control basics even in state-of-the-art systems; eliminating nonlinearities, proper cascade control • Successful temperature control in glass, metal, and glass-lined reactors • Dissolved oxygen control without overshoot • Controller tuning in the time domain with modern tools
