B1: Automating Fermentation 9:00AM - 10:00AM (Tuesday, April 24, 2007)
Genentech recently constructed one of the largest biopharmaceutical manufacturing sites in the world in Oceanside, CA. The fermentation area of the facility includes transfer panels, multi-port mix-proof valve assemblies, and 18 bioreactors in 5 different sizes. The batch control includes equipment modules, parallel phases running on units and complex recipes. This presentation will overview how Emerson and Genentech applied the S88 model in order to modularize the control and minimize schedule and cost. It will discuss some lessons learned from the perspectives of both the implementer and the end-user.
